A few questions were raised to the Fair Board and Staff regarding carnival operations at the 2018 Fair. After meeting with the carnival company
Empty Seats The Ferris Wheel often does not have a full load. It makes it easier to balance and is more efficient when it isn’t completely full. Cobra kiddie ride did run half loads on Wednesday. A replacement part was overnighted and the Cobra has been running full loads since Thursday. Ride Closures Area 51 and Super Shot were down roughly 10 minutes on Thursday to do a mid-day inspection by the carnival company, which is not uncommon for fairs with long hours. The Sizzler, a nearly brand-new ride, was broken down upon arrival. PBJ had hoped to get a part for repair, but the needed part was not available quickly enough. The Sizzler was removed from the grounds and replaced with another ride. Inspections/Safety **Rides are inspected annually by National Association Of Amusement Ride Safety. Prior to rides opening at the Washington Town & Country Fair, they were inspected by the Fire Department and Building Inspector. All rides are also reviewed daily by PBJ employees. "Safety is our top priority," said Cody Casper, co-owner of PBJ Happee Day Shows. "We would rather shut a ride down for a bit to ensure it is completely safe. While the down-time is inconvenient to fair-goers, we won't sacrifice safety for convenience." The 2018 Washington Town & Country Fair Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 4. The auction will include 47 Market Steers, 24 Market Lambs, 11 Market Dairy, and 170 Market Hogs. The auction line-up is available here. A printed version will be provided for all bidders.

We ask that larger units arrive by 2:00 p.m. for line up. New for 2018: If you would like your float to be judged, you will need to be in staging and ready for the judges at 3:00. Sponsorships are available for the 2018 Washington Town & Country Fair Queen Contest. The Fair Queen Contest is a summer-long program that includes activities such as Contestant/Sponsor Luncheon, “A Day of Professionalism”, “A Day in Washington”, Run/Walk, and Parade. The Queen Contest Sponsors also underwrite four scholarships totaling $4,750, which are awarded to the Queen, 1st and 2nd Runner up, and Miss Congeniality.
“I think the Queen Sponsorship is one of the most valuable sponsorships we offer. A total of 24 sponsors will be selected in a blind drawing at the Chamber Banquet on Saturday, March 24.  Due to factors beyond the control of fair officials, The Turnpike Troubadours concert scheduled for August 3, 2018 at the Washington Town & Country Fair has been canceled. The band has accepted an offer to tour with Miranda Lambert, canceling their previously booked shows that overlap with the new tour dates. “We are disappointed, definitely,” said Fair Chairman Brian Gildehaus. The Turnpike Troubadours were scheduled to appear as part of a Red Dirt Triple Feature with Chris Knight and Jason Boland and the Stragglers. The rest of the night’s lineup remains intact, and fair officials expect to announce a replacement for the Turnpike Troubadours in the next few weeks. “We did everything we could do to make something work out for a Turnpike Troubadours show at the fair this year,” commented Fair Manager Jennifer Giesike. “While it is an extremely frustrating situation for our fair, we understand that the opportunity to be included with a tour of that magnitude would be hard to pass up.”
**Ticket Refunds: Those who purchased Friday daily admission tickets and would like to request a refund should send an e-mail to office@washmofair.com stating the purchaser's name. Refunds will be issued for purchases made through Tuesday, 3-13-18 and will posted to the purchasing credit card by March 31, 2018. Three more entertainers have been announced for this year’s Washington Town & Country Fair, bringing the total number of concerts to a staggering nine shows in five days!
The “Life’s Whatcha Make It” tour, featuring Jake Owen with Chris Janson and Jordan Davis, comes to the Pepsi Main Stage on Saturday, August 4. The full week’s line-up also includes Josh Wilson on Wednesday, August 1, Walker Hayes on Thursday, August 2, a Red Dirt Triple Feature on Friday, August 3 with Chris Knight, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, and Whiskey Myers. Sawyer Brown closes out the week on Sunday, August 5. 2018 Fair Chairman Brian Gildehaus said, “I’m really pleased with what we were able to accomplish this year. There will be no shortage of action, with nine entertainers in five days!” Fair officials were also quick to point out that while everyone is very excited for the 2018 line-up, the absence of rock and roll is not the start of a new trend at the fair. Fair Manager Jennifer Giesike commented, “We love having rock and roll at the fair, and we looked into a number of acts during the booking process, the pieces just didn’t come together for that this year. While budget is a key part of the decision-making process, routing is also a huge issue. Sometimes entertainers already have shows booked in other parts of the country before or after our fair and it isn’t feasible for them to get to Washington. Other times, entertainers have already booked dates in St. Louis for the summer, and venues typically have restrictions on how soon another show can be booked within the area.” Tim Poepsel who handles the booking process and manages the backstage operations during the fair, agreed, “If we don’t feel that what is available is going to be a big draw here, or up to our standard, we aren’t going to pursue it.” “I understand there will be some fairgoers who are disappointed that we weren’t able to get a rock band,” commented Gildehaus. “Sometimes it just isn’t possible. At the end of the day, we try to deliver the best line-up and value we can for the fairgoers, and I’m proud of what we have put together for 2018.” |
